  • The U.S. has had a long-time agreement with Mali to support it. For the moment, the U.S. cannot show support for an "independent Azawad." It is something that needs to come about gradually, because of these long-time agreements. But I think that this report demonstrates that there are people in the U.S. government who understand that Mali is incapable of hosting the Tuaregs, that the Tuaregs have been oppressed by Mali, and that the Tuaregs need support from the U.S. (development, and support against the terrorists). The report does not says that the U.S. will not consider an independent Azawad, only that most countries probably would not consider it ... but with time, all things can change. It will be a long time before Mali can get organized. Right now, this is an opportunity, I think, for the Tuaregs to try to get U.S. support (development, and support against the terrorists). The U.S. knows that the only people who can really fight in the Sahara are the Tuareg fighters.
