Encore quasi inconnu des oreilles occidentales, Omar Moctar, dit “Bambino”, est l’idole de la jeunesse touarègue du Niger. En version électrique, il donne des prestations survoltées, ce qui lui vaut souvent la comparaison avec Jimi Hendrix. En acoustique, il propose des chansons mélodiques, qui sont souvent reprises au coin du feu, à l’instar de “Yamidinine”, véritable “tube” dans l’aire touarègue.
Fin 2004, Bambino a enregistré en version acoustique cette dizaine de titres en plein désert du Ténéré, ce qui constitue son premier véritable album. Il y interprète plusieurs de ses compositions et rend aussi hommage à d’autres artistes Touaregs (Abdallah Oumbadougou, Hasso, Kedou).
Le label Reaktion rend aujourd’hui disponible en téléchargement cet enregistrement historique. L’album est accompagné d’un livret numérique incluant les traductions des chansons, une interview de Bambino et un texte de l’ethnomusicologue Anouck Genthon.

Still largely unknown to Western ears, Omar Moctar, aka "Bambino", is the idol of the young Tuareg of Niger. He performs wild gigs with the electric guitar, which have often earned him comparisons with Jimi Hendrix. Bambino's melodic tracks (like 'Yamidinine') are often sung around campfires, proof among the Tuareg that his are "hit" songs.
In late 2004 Bambino recorded acoustic versions of 10 tracks in the Ténéré desert, which became this, his first real album. He sings and plays several of his compositions and also pays tribute to other Tuareg artists (Abdallah Oumbadougou, Hasso, Kedou).
The label Reaktion has now made this historical recording available to download. The album is released with a digital booklet including translations of the songs, an interview with Bambino and text by the ethnomusicologist Anouck Genthon.
